As well as traditional migratory flows, commuting has also taken on a pertinent role in the process of spatial production and organization, especially at the regional level. In this context, this paper aims to evaluate the participation of migration in commuting in the Areas of Influence (AIs) of the principal Brazilian metropolises, based on the sample microdata of the 1980 and 2010 Demographic Censuses. The initial comparison of these two census decades shows that there was a significant increase in commuting intensity, both in terms of the volume of people and the number of vectors. Furthermore, the data also show that there was a considerable decrease in the proportion of the decade’s migrants in intra-regional commuting, as well as an increase in the weight of native non-migrants of the municipality of residence in the composition of these displacements.
