Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • Unprecedented and original contribution, resulting from dense masters, doctorate and similar research;
  • Manuscript formatted without identification of authorship (guarantee to blind evaluation) with a maximum of 40,000 characters;
  • Graphic materials (figures, tables and graphs) submitted on the platform as individual files, in jpg format and with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi's. Delivery outside this standard will entail the non-publication of the work;
  • Manuscript not submitted to another vehicle of publication;
  • Manuscript to follow guidelines in the topic "GUIDELINES FOR AUTHORS" in the "SUBMISSION" section of MERCATOR;
  • The title of the manuscript, as well as abstracts, should be written in three languages, both Portuguese and English, which are mandatory, and either French or Spanish;
  • Addresses should be included as active text (ex: http://www.ufc.br);
  • Be aware of the need for the article to be translated into English after acceptance by the journal.
  • Indication of the ORCID ID and link to the Lattes Curriculum.

Author Guidelines

PRECONDITIONS FOR SUBMISSION OF PAPERS

The papers to be submitted to MERCATOR must be original and unpublished.

The author is entirely responsible for the paper's contents, the periodical reserving the right not be held accountable for it.

Submissions of the same paper to other publishing vehicles occurring at the same time are not allowed.

MERCATOR submits the published originals to an academic peer review process (double blind).

 

PRESENTATION OF PAPERS

The paper must be given  title, full names for all the authors, academic title, institution and author’s e-mail address.

Title of the paper: A paper must have a short, straightforward title directed at the general reader. It should be brief and sufficiently specific and containing the key words. The title must be in Portuguese and English.

Summary: The paper must be accompanied by a summary (200 words) setting out briefly and clearly the main objects and results of the work. It must be translated to English or French.  

Acknowledgement: Contributors may be acknowledged in a separate paragraph at the end of the paper and it should be as brief as possible.

Graphic materials: The graphics and photographs must be legible and clear to the reader and provided in jpg format (black and white or color).  They must be indicated by serial number. If the illustrations submitted have already been published, mention the source.

Charts and Tables: Charts and Tables are essential to understanding the communication. They must be accompanied header in order to understand the meaning of the information without reference to the text, according to the up dated rules of tabular presentation of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistic - IBGE. They also have their own sequential numbering for each type and their locations must be marked in the text, indicating the order number.

 

STANDARD OF PAPER

Papers must be submitted to the ABNT standards: NBR-10520 (information and documentation - quotation – presentation) and NBR- 6023 (information and documentation – reference – elaboration) from August 2002.

GENERAL PRESENTATION RULES

The author’s surname must be quoted in lowercase outside brackets.  When it in brackets, must be capitalized

Example:

A ironia seria assim uma forma implicita de heterogeneidade mostrada, conforme a classificação proposta por Authier-Reiriz (1982)."Apesar das aparências, a descontrução do logocentrismo não é uma psicanálise da filosofia [...]"(DERRIDA, 1967, p.293).

 

Specify in the text: the page, tome or section on the source consulted, when in direct quotes. They must follow the date, separated by a comma. In indirected quotations the indication of the pages consulted is optional.

Example:

A produção de lítio começa em Searles Lake, Califórnia, em 1928 (MUMFORD, 1949, v.3, p.583).Oliveira e Leonardos (1943, p.146) dizem que a "[...] relação da série São Roque com os granitos porfiróides pequenos é muito clara." Meyer parte de uma passagem da crônica de "14 de maio" de A Semana: "Houive sol, e grande sol, naquele domingo de 1888, em que o Senado votou a lei, que a regente sancionou [...]" (ASSIS, 1994, v.3, p.583).

 

Three lines direct quotation must be enclosed in double inverted commas. Single inverted comma is used to indicate quotation within the quotation.

Example:

Barbour (1971, p.35) descreve: "O estudo da morfologia dos terrenos [...] ativos [...]." "Não se mova, faça de conta que está morta."(CLARAC; BONNIN, 1985, p.72).Segundo Sá (1995, p.27): ";;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;[...] por meio da mesma ‘arte de conversação’ que abrange tão extensa e significativa parte da nossa existência cotidiana [...]"

 

More than three lines direct quotation must be highlighted with space of 4cm left margin using smaller letter in the text used. Inverted commas are not required.

Example:

A teleconferência permite ao indivíduo participar de um encontro nacional ou regional sem a necessidade de deixar seu local de origem. Tipos comuns de teleconferência incluem o uso da televisão, telefone, e computador. Através de áudio-conferência, utilizando a companhia local de telefone, um sinal de áudio pode ser emitido em um salão de qualquer dimensão. (NICHOLS, 1993, p. 181).

 

CALL SYSTEM

Quotations must be indicated in the text by a call system: [...] author-date.

When the author’s name and responsible institution are part of the sentence you must indicate the date and the page in brackets (direct quotation).

Example:

Em Teatro Aberto (1963) relata-se a emergência do teatro do absurdo. Segundo Morais (1955, p.32) assinala "[...] a presença de concreções de bauxita no Rio Cricon.

 

Quotations from different texts by the same author and published in the same year are distinguished by adding letters in alphabetic order after date without space, according to reference list.

Example:

De acordo com Reeside (1927a)(REESIDE, 1927b).

 

Indirect quotations of different authors and documents listed simultaneously must be separated by a semicolon in alphabetic order. 

Example:

Ela polariza e encaminha, sob forma de "demanda coletiva", as necessidades de todos (FONSECA, 19997; PAIVA, 1997; SILVA, 1997)Diversos autores salientam a importância do "acontecimento desencadeador" no início de um processo de aprendizagem (CROSS, 1984; KNOX, 1986; MEZIROW, 1991).
