FEIRAS NORDESTINAS (fairs in northeastern Brazil)
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study intends to discuss the dominant elements for origin and evolution of the street markets in northeastern Brazil. It takes into consideration the history of the economical activity which gave the greatest contribution to the occupation of the national territory, and consequently to the regional occupation and to the cattle breeding. Due to this activity, the street markets became an important establishment in the context of the economical ortheastern development. Therefore, cattle breeding made possible the human settlement of Agreste and Sertão and generated conditions to the uprising of commercial relations, which were addressed to cattle trading at first. There was the origin of the cattle street markets, which evolved into the current events. This work also analyses the importance of this social, economical issue for the dynamic of the municipalities into the northeastern backcountry.
