TO THINK ABOUT THE A NEW WORLD: the geography of Jesuists in Brazil
Abstract
The fundamental aim of this paper is to show that the jesuits who were in Brazil during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries were able to produce works of important geographic contents which cannot go on being unknown or ignored by the present time geographers, for they constitute important sources for the geography of Brazil or, at least, for history of this geography. In order to know the origin and richness of contents which are present in these works, we have decided to start an analysis of contents of some of them, which will allow the comment on some hints which will help the present time geographers on the comprehension of the jesuitic texts, many times, apparently difficult, airtight or even imaginative and, perhaps due to this, forgotten by the brazilian geography for a long time.
