FORMA, DIMENSÕES E FEIÇÕES GERAIS DA TERRA: da Antiguidade ao Renascimento (from ancient age to renaissance: discussions and representations about the form, dimensions and general characteristics of earth)
Abstract
Este ensaio tem por objetivo elaborar uma visão geral das discussões e das representações sobre a forma, as dimensões e as feições gerais da Terra, desde a antiguidade até o final da Idade Média, quando do Renascimento Cultural na Europa. Em termos metodológicos, a pesquisa adota a visão de longo prazo elaborada na abordagem de Lacoste (1988) e compreendeu uma revisão da literatura que considerou obras como a Geografia de Ptolomeu (PTOLOMEU, 1991), estudos de referência no tema, como Kimble (2006), e manuais de história do pensamento geográfico, como Lencioni (2003). Os conhecimentos geográficos dos gregos, acrescidos das contribuições dos romanos, foram sistematizados por Estrabão e por Ptolomeu, no início da era cristã. As obras desses geógrafos chegaram à posteridade, tendo sido consideradas pelos bizantinos, após a queda de Roma, e pelos árabes, depois da expansão do Islã, no século VII. Essa tradição clássica foi resgatada no Renascimento Europeu. A fusão de elementos dessa tradição com in From Ancient Age to Renaissance: discussions and representations about the form, dimensions and general characteristics of Earth.terpretações de inspiração cristã, com a geografia dos árabes, com a tradição da cartografia náutica (cartas portulano) e as navegações e descobertas geográficas da primeira metade do século XV ensejou um fase de transição nesse campo do conhecimento, em que a Geografia de Ptolomeu começou a ser suplantada por novas tentativas de descrição e representação geral do mundo.

ABSTRACT
This essay has as objective elaborate a general view of discussions and representations about the form, dimensions and general characteristics of Earth, since Ancient Age until Middle Age, before Cultural Renascence in Europe. Methodologically, the research adopts a long term view elaborated in Lacoste’s approach (1988) and comprehended a literature review that considered works as Ptolemy’s Geographia (PTOLEMY, 1991), reference studies in the theme, as Kimble (2006), and History of Geographic Thought manuals, as Lencioni (2003). Greek people geographical knowledge, added with Roman contributions, was systematized by Strabo and by Ptolemy, in the Christian Age beginning. These geographer’s work reached posterity, have been considered by Byzantines, after Rome’s fall, and by Arabs, after Islamic expansion, in the VII Century. This classical tradition was brought back in European Renascence. This tradition elements fusion with interpretations of Christian inspiration, with Arabs Geography, with nautical Cartography tradition (Portolan charts) and the navigations and geographical findings in the first half of XV century opened a transition phase in this field of knowledge, in which Ptolemy’s Geography started being surpassed by new attempts of description and World general representation.

RESUMEN
Este ensayo tiene como objetivo abarcar una visión general de las discusiones y de las representaciones sobre la forma, las dimensiones y los rasgos generales de la Tierra, desde la antigüedad hasta el final de la Edad Media, de la época del Renacimiento en la Europa. En términos metodológicos, la investigación emplea una visión a largo plazo elaborada en el abordaje de Lacoste (1988) y comprende una revisión de la literatura que consideró obras como la Geografía de Ptolomeu (PTOLOMEU, 1991), estudios de referencia en la temática, como Kimble (2006) y manuales de historia del pensamiento geográfico, como Lencioni (2003). Los conocimientos geográficos de los griegos, añadidos de las contribuciones de los romanos, fueron sistematizados por Estrabão y por Ptolomeu en el inicio de la era cristiana. Las obras de estes geógrafos llegaron a la posterioridad, siendo consideradas por los bizantinos, tras la caída de Roma, y por los árabes, después de la expansión del Islamismo, en el siglo VII. Esa tradición clásica fue rescatada en el Renacimiento Europeo. La fusión de elementos de esa tradición con interpretaciones de inspiración cristiana, con la geografía de los árabes, con la tradición de la cartografía náutica (cartas portulano) y las navegaciones y descubrimientos geográficos de la primera mitad del siglo XV empezaron una fase de transición en ese campo de conocimiento, en que la Geografía de Ptolomeu comenzó a ser derribada por nuevos intentos de descripción y representación general del mundo.
