A GEOGRAFIA NO PENSAMENTO FILOSÓFICO (geography in philosophical thinking)
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The changing concept of geography throughout history can only be understood based on the comprehension of philosophy. Geography has its origins in the holistic knowledge of antiquity which tried to explain the world and the human being in it and was simply known as philosophy. Only in the 18th and 19th century geography was acknowledged as a science. As in all fields of science its thinkers and schools followed the tendencies and theories of their times, which were influenced by their historical context and economical and ideological interests. This article ponders over a possible connection between the ideas of some philosophers and certain theories and axioms supported by acknowledged geographers. The resulting insights may neither be considered conclusive nor the absolute truth.
Key words: Geography, Philosophy, History.
