VISÕES AMBÍGUAS DE UM BRASIL ESQUECIDO (Brazil: ambiguous visions of a forgotten country)
Abstract
O capítulo consagrado ao Brasil na Géographie Universelle de Conrad Malte-Brun, publicada entre 1810 e 1847, é uma fonte preciosa que nos ajuda a reconstituir o passado de um Brasil há muito tempo esquecido. Ele também nos revela o olhar que um europeu culto lançava sobre este mundo para ele remoto e exótico. A imagem que surge desta leitura é ambígua, com julgamentos de valor que podem nos surpreender. No entanto, o texto é notável pela amplitude e pela clarividência, dado o estado ainda embrionário da informação disponível e, portanto, merece uma releitura.

Abstract
The chapter on Brazil in Conrad Malte-Brun’s Géographie Universelle, published between 1810 and 1847, is a valuable source that helps us to reconstruct the past of a long forgotten Brazil. It also reveals the way an well educated European saw a distant and exotic world. The picture that emerges from this reading is ambiguous, with value judgments that can surprise us. This text is nonetheless notable for its magnitude and vision, given the embryonic state of information available, and deserves a to be re-read.

Résumé
Le chapitre consacré au Brésil dans la Géographie Universelle de Conrad Malte-Brun, publiéé entre 1810 et 1847, est une source précieuse qui nous aide à reconstituer le passé d’un Brésil depuis longtemps oublié. Il nous révèle en outre le regard qu’un européen cultivé jetait sur un monde pour lui lointain et exotique. L’image qui ressort de cette lecture ambigüe, avec des jugements de valeur qui peuvent nous surprendre. Ce texte est pourtant notable par son amplitude et sa clairvoyance, étant donné l’état embryonnaire de l’information disponible et mérite donc une relecture.
